I had heard rumors that Houston had made this exact offer on the last day of the GM meetings with a deadline of this weekend. The Astros needed another slugger in the middle of the lineup. Berkman put up great numbers on the worst offensive team in baseball. This should give him some protection and allow the Astros to move Ensberg to 2nd in the batting order, where he can use his high OBP to help set the table.
At the same time, Houston also signed Woody Williams who should eat lots of innings for the Astros. The Astros have a good pen, but they need another starter besides Oswalt who can get go at least 7 and save the pen. Williams should be that guy.
