If Bernie wants to play I don't see why his agent hasn't approached the Marlins. They really have no experienced centerfielder, Bernie would draw fans in Florida and could mentor a lot of the younger players. If by the end of July he is having a decent season he could be traded to a contender for a prospect of two. I don't see how the Marlins could lose, overall.
Bernie HAS to see the writing on the wall in New York and has no right to feel bad for it all. He is at best the 5th outfielder in the Yankees plans. If you really wanted to plot a depth chart, Miguel Cairo is the 5th outfielder in a pinch, unless one of the two Kevins make the team.
If the Rule 5 pick goes bust early it may open a spot for Bern (but probably a Kevin), but I see them carrying 11 pitchers, 2 catchers, a DH, Jeets, Alex, Robbie, dMan-K, Cairo, Philips, Phelps(Rule 5), Damon, Abreu, Matsui, Melky.
If they carry just 10 arms it means Bruney, Karstens, Bean, Beam or Rasner gets left behind, and I think Torre will want a arm to waste. Not to mention that Phillip Hughes is only a short time away.
Any thoughts? I will miss Bernie terribly. He came up through Albany here and I knew he and his wife. He was a pleasure to watch develop and turn into the champion he is now. One of the dominant players of the last decade he probably has a decent shot at the Hall of Fame someday.
