Dallas McPherson said that he'd almost certainly need surgery to repair a herniated disk after the core strengthening program he began last fall netted no improvement all winter.
"It's beyond baseball — it's getting to the point where it affects your daily life," said McPherson, who will be examined by an orthopedic spine specialist Monday in Dallas. "Just getting out of bed, tying my shoes, putting on my pants, is painful." Surgery would likely cause McPherson to miss most or all of the season. Maybe he'd be ready to play in August or September, but the Angels probably wouldn't give him much of an opportunity then. McPherson's injury would seem to make it less likely that Chone Figgins would be dealt, though with Maicer Izturis and Robb Quinlan on the roster, the team still has alternatives at third base.
