Marathon runners will be particularly hit by the pollutants.
That all sounds swell, but I doubt that there is any validity to such theories. You don't die from polution because of a few hours of exposure. And of course the other athletes will be outdoors for hours and hours in practice sessions. And even if they were not, is China equipped with some special filtering air conditioning which makes the air indoors okay while the air outdoors is deadly?

Is China today any smoggier than LA in 1980 when they staged the Olympics there without any casualties from polution?

As for the ones who supposedly have asthma, what the hell are they doing trying to be long distance runners?

Yes, China is smoggier than LA in 1980.

As for why he's a marathoner, its probably because he's crazy. But he's also the best ever.

The average income in Ethiopia is about $100 per year. For his victory alone in last year's Berlin Marathon, Gebrselassie made 50,000 Euros and another 50,000 for his world record.

Well then, if he's in it for the money, he will just have to decide if it's worth the risk, won't he?

Running a marathon can kill you. Just ask Pheidippides.

His asthma isn't that bad and he doesn't decide anyway, his federation does. That's the Third World for you.

That doesn't say he is forced to compete, only whether or not he will be allowed to compete. It's still his decision to take the risk if the federation says okay.

I hope it embarrasses them. Given China's recordand recent activities, I';m not sure I'd send a team.

I spent a month in China in the summerof 2006. My experience is that air and water quality was horrible. I've been in LA and Denver on bad air days and they aren't as bad as Beijing on a regular day. My eyes burned the whole time I was there. Will you die from running a marathon in that air? I doubt it, but I could see an asthmatic having more trouble there than he would in most places.
