I'd pull the trigger on this one.
Freeing up Heltons salary allows the Rockies to keep players like Atkins, Holliday, Cook, etal.
It will be the only way the franchise can move forward before 2011, if you believe the whole "you can't win with X% of your salary taken up by one player" argument. I'm starting to wonder if that isn't a valid discussion that the franchise needs to have.
If the Rockies have to absorb half of his salary, it's worth it.
More than half, there are going to be diminished returns.
Now factor in the argument that Roxpert has been making about the Rockies needing to raise their player salary into the $70M-$80M range, and it would allow the GM to spend $20M-$30M to start filling holes.
