The producers have become far too self-important about the show's "relevance" while the product itself became stale, repetitive. The plot itself

I wasn't even really looking forward to a new season anyway. Carlos Bernard must have the best agent in all of Hollywood, because the infuriatingly bland Tony Almeida keeps finding ways back into the show.

Of course I always got the feeling that the writers of the show were secretly liberal idealists. On the show, while torture, indefinite detention, and warrantless spying always eventually stop the terrorists within 24 hours time...America still looks like an insanely crappy place to live. Thousands of Americans dying every year from bombs, gases, germs, nukes, meltdowns. Everyone else on the planet, China, Russia, a hundred different terrorist groups and a slew of shady corporations all constantly attacking the American homeland no matter how many countries America invades to 'fight em over there.' Every President is either completely corrupt (and proof of why never to trust government with the very powers Jack Bauer relies on) or is quickly removed from office by assassins, usually with help from inside the government.
