Not to go too far off topic here, but this is a huge fallacy that sports owners use on their fanbase. A variant of "... since payroll is up, we have no choice but to raise our ticket prices to cover our costs...".
The reality is that ticket prices are set by your basic, simple supply and demand law, to maximize revenue. If the Sox knew that if they set all their ticket prices at $500 they'd still sell 30,000+ tickets, that's what tickets would cost, REGARDLESS of whether their total payroll was a Yankeesque $250 Million, or a Marlinesque $15 Million.
Conversely, if they knew nobody in the city of Boston would ever pay more that $5 a seat, then that's how much they'd cost.
There is no direct relationship between team costs and ticket price.
