A writer with the Houston Chronicle reports that the Red Sox already submitted an offer to Clemens for 2/3 of the season. I hope that offer is still on the table even after the Matsuzaka signing. Clemens is truly the final piece to what ought to be a championship team. Clemens in the rotation means Papelbon can go back to closing games. With Gagne in Texas, Dotel in Kansas City, and no other half-decent closers on the market, I have to think that the Red Sox are leaning in this direction. In the past, we had heard John Henry say that Clemens would be a special case in terms of the luxury tax implications. With about $40 million coming off the books for 2008, I think the Red Sox can afford to exceed the luxury tax (as they've also done in 2005 and 2006.)
