Fox WS coverage: a new low?
Absolutely sickening. Doesn't MLB have any standards anymore? They'll take the highest bid and not even require the most minimal standards for separating advertising and coverage.
That Taco Bell thing is out of control. I absolutely refuse to believe that Royce Clayton spontaneously starts spouting off about Taco Bell in the dugout when he happens to be mic'd. A shameless plug, and then they repeat it in Game 2. Followed up by a pre-wired interview with some Taco Bell exec in the stands.
Oh, and by the way Ellsbury's "stolen base" should've been recorded by the scorer as "took 2nd base on defensive indifference." Screw your free taco, that was no stolen base.
In Game 1 they cut away to a taped (between innings) interview with Francona in the dugout. Meanwhile, Helton launches a long drive 3/4 of the way up the Green Monster. They never cut away from the audio of the interview, although they do give us video as the ball is hitting the wall.
I actually preferred the TBS Frank TV nonstop plugs. At least these were the old-fashioned baseball play-by-play man 5 second scripts. Kind of like the local "Elite Auto Glass" spots. That's a longstanding baseball (radio) announcers tradition. Putting mics on ballplayers and having them engage in phony conversation in the dugout is a new low. By the way: why exactly does Royce Clayton still have a job?
And how out of it is old orange hair himself, McCarver? Game 1: "Jeff Francis lives up high in the strike zone -- if he's going to succeed, he'll need to get hitters out on that high fastball." It is obvious he's never seen Francis pitch. Could he at least watch a little video of Francis before doing the game? Is it true that his only preparation is Preparation H?
Yesterday: "Helton is just as good a hitter on the road as at home." Not, "Helton isn't just a Coors Field phenomenon." No: "just as good." Do they even have statisticians? If they do, I guess McCarver just thinks he's so damn entertaining that no one cares if he's accurate.
