It's "very doable" has to do with finishing with a winning record. Which is nice, but it doesn't mean a post-season appearance.
A couple years ago on the old site I started a poll: "When do you think the Rockies will next compete for a title?" I defined "compete" as "a realistic chance of making the playoffs at the beginning of September," and further defined that (I think pretty reasonably) as "within 5 games of the NL West leader of the wildcard leader on September 1."
The choices were 2007, 2008, 2009, or beyond.
I chose 2009. I am very pleased that the Rockies have a shot of arriving 2 years ahead of schedule. With a decent week in SF and SD, they may very well remain within 5 games of the wildcard leader on Sept. 1.
So that's nice. But playoffs? At the start of the day this morning, BP had the Rockies at a 13% chance of making the playoffs. So it could happen, but remember that just a couple weeks ago we were at 25%. So I "called the season" right about when the Rockies' own play halved their chances. And I'm not going back on that. I'll still pull for them, I'll go to 3 or 4 more games because I hate to see baseball end, but I'm not saving the prospective playoff dates on my calendar ...
