Holliday to A’s Trade Reality

Filed under: fanhome | by hiaspire @ 2:46 pm
Rockies agree to deal Holliday to A's - The Denver Post

Quote:

The Rockies have agreed in principle to trade outfielder Matt Holliday to Oakland, according to a source familiar with the deal.

Holliday, a three-time Major League All-Star, has been shopped aggresively this off-season after the Rockies determined they would not be able to sign him to a long-term deal. It is unclear at this point who the Rockies will get back, but Oakland had been offering closer Houston Street and outfielder Carlos Gonazlez.

There will be more details to follow as the day progresses.
RotoWorld:
Quote:

Report: A's give up three for Holliday

A source told Yahoo! Sports' Tim Brown that the Rockies would get Carlos Gonzalez, Huston Street and Greg Smith from the A's for Matt Holliday.

Then the Rockies did extremely well and the A's gave up too much for just one year of a player who has never played at a superstar level outside of Coors Field. Manny Corpas owners should be disappointed if Street is in the deal, as Street would likely close for the Rockies. Smith would jump right into the rotation. Gonzalez could be a candidate to play left field or even center for a year, but everything that happened in 2008 suggests that he needs more minor league time.

Holliday to Cards trade rumor

Filed under: fanhome | by BigRapidsJackass @ 10:19 pm
Ken Rosenthal says the Cards should be considered the frontrunner in the Holliday derby:

FOX Sports on MSN - MLB - Value of Holliday, Atkins questioned

Quote:

Left fielder Matt Holliday's home-road splits last season were not terribly extreme — he had a .997 on-base/slugging percentage at home, an .891 OPS on the road.

Still, maybe the Cardinals should think twice about their proposed trade for Holliday, which, according to one source, would require them to part with outfielders Ryan Ludwick and Skip Schumaker along with right-hander Mitchell Boggs.
I immediately thought: No! And on second thought, Hell No!! The Rox should be getting a young top prospect for Holliday, not a guy who's actually older than Holliday who, until last season, looked like kind of a slower Ryan Spilborghs. Seemed like a classic "duck for cover" move by O'Dowd: he's giving Holliday away, and he gets to spin it by saying we're acquiring a guy who actually hit 12 more HRs than Matt last year, etc, etc, blah, blah, blah ...

But then I got to thinking. Ludwick sure looked like he had a classic fluke season. 29 years old, and out of nowhere he pops 37 HRs. But then I looked some more: flukey, yes, but we've also got a pretty good ballplayer here, and there's a chance (maybe 1 in 3?) that this wasn't really way out of line with what he might do over the next 3 years (when he becomes a free agent). He's also a very good outfielder. He seemed to be aided by a quite high BABIP (.349), but not outrageously high; after all, he hit the ball awfully hard, and Hardballtimes' PrOPS stat shows that given his line drive percentage, etc., he really wasn't particularly "lucky" at all.

So I'm changing my mind. I'm perfectly fine with the Ludwick component.

EDIT: Here's Sickels at minorleagueball.com on Ludwick:

Quote:

Injuries hampered him in 2004 and 2005 and he was unable to gain much consistency, struggling in his major league time though showing impressive flashes of power. He spent all of 2006 at Triple-A Toledo in the Tigers sytem, then he finally got another shot at playing time with the Cardinals in 2007.

As you know, he's currently having an excellent campaign with the Cardinals, hitting .292/.367/.575 with 33 homers thus far. A lot of people seem quite surprised by this, but it really isn't that far out of context. Indeed, in the 2003 book I wrote that Ludwick "could hit 30 homers someday" in a full season of major league play. His career didn't take off until now due to poorly-timed injuries and lack of committment from his previous clubs.

For the future, Ludwick is probably having his career season right now, and I don't expect him to be a .290+ hitter in most seasons, but the power will carry forward. Also note that he's an excellent defensive outfielder and a sound athlete, he's not just a one-dimensional slugger. This should help him avoid premature aging that often happens with "old player skill" types.
As I said ... I'm o.k. with the Ludwick component; now let's find the other player we can use.

But you can keep Skip Schumaker. And this Mitchell Boggs guy looks like a marginal young pitcher. Sickels graded him as a C+; the dreaded non-power pitcher righty who isn't really a sinkerballer. And I don't really see a decent minor league pitcher in the Cards organization to substitute for him. One guy, Jaime Garcia, pitched a bit for them last year and could be a useful 5th starter/swingman type, but I'd want someone with a higher upside, and they are not going to deal stud OF prospect Colby Rasmus.

If they could come up with something more -- maybe it would require a 3-team deal -- this could turn out to be the best deal out there. Everyone knows Holliday's a rent-a-player for one year, and the chances of getting a Hanley Ramirez-type prospect probably aren't that great. I'd still hold out for Philip Hughes, since I think the Yanks have soured on him, but this Cards deal perhaps isn't so ridiculous after all.

Cardinals making a move for Holliday

Filed under: fanhome | by Nighthawk @ 11:28 am
Via Rotoworld:

Sources tell FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal that the Rockies and Cardinals have discussed swapping Matt Holliday for Ryan Ludwick, Skip Schumaker and Mitchell Boggs.

Fantasy Baseball, Football, Basketball and Hockey - news, projections, cheatsheets, depth charts, draft guide - Rotoworld.com

Rosenthal isn't the greatest source, but he isn't the worst either. Can anyone find support for this, or is it just a rumor.

If true, I think we have to carefully consider doing it. This really comes down to two considerations:

a) Do we really believe that Ludwick magically became a top 15 MLB hitter at the age of 29? I mean....really? It all comes down to that. Schu and Boggs are eminently replaceable. If Ludwick is 2008's Bottenfield, trade him now. That worked pretty well last time we tried it, yes?

b) Is Holliday as much of a Coors monster as he appears to be? Considering he has pretty much even AB at home vs. away, he loses fifty points of OPS, almost two hundred points of SLG and 77 points of AVG away from Colorado. That's pretty scary. However, he's certainly more of a known commodity than Ludwick, slightly younger and with a higher ceiling.

This trade has the potential to be similar to the Bottenfield deal...but caution and future contract demands for Holliday should be taken into account. I'd be very interested in this deal, but cautious. The next step would be where to bat him...I'd actually consider (travesty) putting a healthy Albert 4th and let Holliday bat third. You think he'll see a lot of fastballs with a HOF hitter in his prime coming up next?

Thoughts?

Panthers vs Raiders

Filed under: fanhome | by jerrcar @ 9:35 am
We go into Raiders stadium Sunday, and according to the media, where everything but the kitchen sink, is thrown from the black hole, to the opposing team.
The Panthers will have to play a good game to win here, especially with the Raiders wanting to show they're capable of being in the NFL.
According to their press, they've lost several games they shouldn't, and have a lot to show their fans.
Go Panthers!

Submit a Story!

Filed under: fanhome | by RockintheRed @ 12:21 pm
As promised, I'm back today with a few ideas that will allow for more reader interactivity on this site. Have you ever wanted to write your opinion on what the Cardinals should do during the off-season? Do you have some good ideas for trade rumors or possibilities? Like to write baseball-related haikus or sonnets? Ever wanted to step into the world of blogging and have your thoughts heard? I want all of these, and I want them for you and from you. At Rockin' the Red, I am extending the opportunity for you readers to have your thoughts, ideas, and works of art displayed here in your very own post.

Here's how it will work:

(1.) You can write an essay, a simple one paragraph discussion, a five paragraph short story - any type of composition that is Cardinals or baseball related. Topics are your choice.

(2.) Submit it to me via kujo@rockinthered.com.

(3.) If it meets all the specifications (and there aren't many of them), I'll post it and notify you when it's up.

My goal is to let this blog serve not only as a sounding board for my opinions and thoughts but also as a sounding board for the rest of Cardinal Nation throughout the country and world. It allows you to have your voice heard and allows me to add some new ideas into the lifeblood of this blog.

My only specifications:

(1.) It must be relevant to Cardinals baseball or baseball in general. Maybe it is a firsthand account of a Redbirds game in Memphis, or maybe it's a story of a bond you shared with your father at Busch Stadium. A haiku about Fredbird. Anything will do.

(2.) Profanity must be limited as much as possible. I will deem what shall be considered obscene or unsuitable for this blog.

(3.) Make a strong case. If you're writing about trade possibilities, defend why you think Player A will be traded for Player B, and why General Manager C will be dumb enough to trade for Player A. Coherence and brevity are good indicators of a strong argument.

I really hope some of you participate in this opportunity. You can submit stuff as many times as you want, and your post will be on the front page for all to see. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to e-mail me at kujo@rockinthered.com. I hope to see some good work soon!
