Rockies Dim Interest, Pads Part Ways with Edmonds

Filed under: fanhome | by RockintheRed @ 4:20 pm
An update to the Colorado Rockies' interest in Anthony Reyes - Rockies owner Dick Monfort is not in a hurry to acquire another starter for the rotation, according to Troy Renck of The Denver Post:
Despite the team's poor start, he said the Rockies have no plans to acquire a frontline starting pitcher or even a fifth starter such as Cincinnati's Josh Fogg. Monfort is comfortable giving prized pitching prospect Greg Reynolds a shot starting Sunday in San Diego.
The Rockies could very well be in the hunt for another starter in the weak NL West in a month, but for now they'll go with Greg Reynolds, their 22-year-old tall righty. Anthony Reyes will make his first start of the season for Triple-A Memphis tonight, so this will be an important day for him and the Cardinals organization. If he can string some solid starts together, we could be revisiting the Rockies, Angels, or Braves as potential trading partners. Stay tuned.

The San Diego Padres have also made some Cardinals-worthy news, cutting Jim Edmonds, our former All-Star center fielder. He certainly wasn't an All-Star for the Pads in his short time there, hitting .184/.270/.241 in 87 AB. It's tough seeing Jim struggle so much this year and last year, and I hope he makes the right decision for his career moving forward. There might be some teams wanting to take a flier on Edmonds, but I wouldn't be opposed to having him come back as a coach, a la Larry Walker.

The move could impact the Cards' trading plans as well. The Padres, desperate for offense, promoted Jody Gerut from Triple-A but are still in the market for an outfielder. Their best trading chip could be Khalil Greene, who is still struggling mightily at shortstop. It could be a good time to buy low on Greene, or it could be a big red flag cautioning us to stay away.

Jim Edmonds was released by San Diego today. although not surprised, I was hoping to see Jimmy again in July. Maybe he should just come back home and run f15teen!

Stoking the Hot Stove

Filed under: fanhome | by RockintheRed @ 5:20 pm
It's time for another feature here at Rockin' the Red - Stoking the Hot Stove, coverage of all the possible rumors and trade possibilities that include the Cardinals. This area will include trade candidates that are likely to be shopped before (or perhaps after) the trade deadline, updated according to their link. On the left sidebar, you will find a countdown until the trade deadline, which is coming quicker than you would think, and, on the right sidebar, you will now find an icon to take you directly to this post.

I'll do my best to continually update Stoking the Hot Stove as rumors spring up, and, as always, if you have any tips or rumors you can contact me at kujo41@sbcglobal.net.

Evaluating Our Options has a list of potential middle infield trade candidates that could be targets this July, including scouting reports of some of the more notable players mentioned.

Rockies Inquire on Anthony Reyes (5/8) - The Rockies, seeking to improve their starting rotation, are interested in Anthony Reyes, who is currently at Triple-A Memphis. A commenter mentions the possibility of a swap for Ian Stewart, the 23-year-old 3rd baseman in their Triple-A system. You can find a very good scouting report on him here, and, from the looks of it, Stewart would be a good haul to get from the Rox. He is compared to a hot corner version of Troy Tulowitzki, even acknowledging the inflating effects of Colorado Springs:
For Stewart, the key lies in his home/road split. In Colorado Springs, he was a very good hitter. He went .357/.427/.580 with 9 of his 15 Triple-A home runs. On the road he hit .251/.323/.377 with 6 of his 15 home runs. Obviously this difference is concerning. But what is more concerning is that his LD% was three points lower at home and his GB% was 12 points higher at home. He walked more at home and struck out less. His BABIP increased .102 at home.
It is definitely something worth exploring for the Cardinals - could be the best package we get for Reyes. Stewart would join David Freese and Allen Craig as the top 3rd base prospects in the system and could be the heir apparent to the hot corner after Troy Glaus finishes his contract in 2009.

Reyes Could Be Showcased in Memphis (5/4) - Quoting Bernie:
When I ran this theory by a high-ranking Cardinals official — Reyes has a chance to showcase himself in Memphis – it wasn’t exactly shot down.
Braves, Angels Scouting Cardinals (5/2) - Both have shortstop prospects, Brent Lillibridge and Sean Rodriguez, that could interest the Cards.

More as they come!

ATL v SD…5/7/08…

Filed under: fanhome | by TheDeathlessHorsie @ 5:28 pm
Evening folks.

"Post hoc, ergo, post propter hoc."

Which, loosely translated from the Latin means, " After, Therefore, Because of it."

I don't know what this means in respect of this young season, but I DO know that Andruw Jones is apparently in the middle of a slump of GALACTIC proportions, Furcal is looking like an MVP candidate, Chipper IS an MVP, old pitchers breakdown, sore elbows must be as infectious as mononucleosis, Jurrjens HAS to be 27, and I pray to whatever Gods there may be that we will eventually put .500 distant in the rearview mirror. But I digress...

Two men lean in from the high ground:
