Ball Waste

The Cleveland announcers got word last night that, after a bit over 500 pitches in the 13th inning, they were into their 16th box of baseballs. Thats approaching 200 balls for 500 pitches, let's say one new baseball for every three pitches. At that rate, about 100 balls per average game, at $10 a ball, MLB spends three million dollars a year on baseballs. Three dollars a pitch. One sellout crowd's ticket prices barely pays for the baseballs for a season.

Is there a compelling reason that a baseball cannot be thrown more than 3 times, on average, before it has to be replaced? How would the quality of the game be harmed if a ball stayed in play for 4 or 5 or even an amazing six pitches? It's not like an ice-cream cone. You can pick it up and go on using it.

Trade rumor updates: Ohman, Bay, Grudz, Johnson

Filed under: fanhome | by RockintheRed @ 8:50 am
A very good start by Chris Carpenter last night leaves this team in a much better position than it was 24 hours ago. We now know that Carp at least has some semblance of his Cy Young-award stuff, and he definitely still has a bulldog mentality to push through when he's not making his pitches. Carp's best pitch was an 83 mph changeup in the first inning - he had a perfect delivery, sound arm action, and good movement on the pitch. I'm excited about last night's start, especially given the amount of improvement Chris had from the first to the fourth inning. He didn't appear to ever be toiling through an inning, which was one of the main things I was looking for.

With the trade deadline less than six hours away, the Cardinals got just as big of an acquisition as CC Sabathia last night. It's no longer imperative to get another starting pitcher, leaving lefthanded reliever and impact bat as our two top priorities.

It's beginning to look more and more like Will Ohman will be coming to the Cardinals today. It's a natural fit, as Will would only need to cross the field to the other dugout today. However, if you believe Mark Bowman of MLB.com, who has been reporting on the discussions between the Braves and Cardinals, we might be out of the running for Ohman:
The Braves feel like they're in good position heading into Thursday's Trade Deadline. More than five teams have shown great interest in Will Ohman and it's believed the Rays, Yankees and Red Sox are among those bidding for his services.

Despite late-Wednesday reports to the contrary, meanwhile, it appears very much that the Cardinals are out of the bidding for Ohman.

With these three AL East teams involved, the Braves may receive a greater return for the left-handed reliever than they originally envisioned.
Darn AL East, screwing up everything. We now have conflicting reports coming out of Georgia. Breaking it down, the Red Sox might be getting John Grabow in a monster three-way trade with the Marlins and Pirates, negating their need for Ohman. The Rays have been linked to Arthur Rhodes and Brian Fuentes, so it's unclear if the Braves are really discussing Ohman with them or just using the Rays for leverage. I'm going to go ahead and say, despite it all, that Ohman will be coming to St. Louis for a lower level prospect.

On to Jason Bay. There's speculation of that huge three-way deal that would go down like this, per Ken Rosenthal:
The Marlins would trade outfielder Jeremy Hermida and a prospect for [Manny] Ramirez, and the Red Sox then would flip Hermida and prospects to the Pirates for left fielder Jason Bay and possibly left-handed reliever John Grabow.
That's your stereotypical, mega-deal blockbuster that always gets rumored this year, only to flop at the last minute. I'm keeping a skeptical eye on this one, but it's one you're going to hear about all day. If it happens, Jason Bay and John Grabow obviously are off the market, leaving the Cardinals with one less impact bat and lefty reliever to choose from.

Bay seems out of the Cards, anyways. According to Dejan Kovacevic, who's been tracking the Jason Bay discussions since the get-go:
9:09 p.m.: St. Louis sounds out of the Bay running.
The Cardinals are staying away from dealing with the Pirates, as expected. The Bucs have one more chip we could be interested in - Jack Wilson - and the price could drop as we get closer to 3:00 CT. I don't foresee anything happening there, though.

As for Mark Grudzielanek, there's no sign that the Cardinals are involved in any discussions for him. The Twins are looking for a second baseman, so they could be targeting Grudz for their middle infield. I don't know why the Cardinals aren't pushing this one harder. Mark would be a sizable upgrade from any of our current second base options, and reporters for the Kansas City Star don't expect to get much for him.

Dark horse to watch for: with all the talk of Will Ohman coming to St. Louis, Braves second baseman Kelly Johnson might be coming up in the discussions as well. Johnson, who's 26 and won't be a free agent until 2012, is batting .267/.344/.429 with 9 home runs and 43 RBI's. Why would the Braves be willing to trade him? Johnson will be arbitration-eligible this off-season, Omar Infante is playing well enough to start alongside Yunel Escobar, and the Braves have middle infielder Brent Lillibridge blocked in Triple-A. The Braves are leaning towards a youth movement, and moving Johnson could be another part of that strategy.

As for the Cardinals perspective, I would be more than willing to give up Jaime Garcia + for Kelly Johnson. He would solve our second base hole for less than it'll take to sign Orlando Hudson, all while providing some lefthanded pop and some speed.

Happy trade deadline day!
