Santana hit hard.

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (AP)—Johan Santana received quite a welcome from teammates and fans in his New York Mets debut. Juan Gonzalez and Albert Pujols delivered a different type of greeting.
Santana gave up a three-run homer to Gonzalez in the first inning, and the St. Louis Cardinals went on to beat the Mets 5-4 in a spring training game Friday.
The Mets stood on the top step of the dugout for Santana when he took the mound to start the game. The crowd chanted his name and cheered his every move.
Twice a unanimous AL Cy Young Award winner, Santana gave up three runs and four hits in two innings. He threw for the cycle, in fact—Gonzalez homered, Brendan Ryan tripled, Pujols doubled and Chris Duncan singled off Santana.
“Today was definitely good,” Santana said. “The fans keep you in the game, they keep you going. They were excited to finally have the opportunity to see me throw.
“I’m very happy to be able to perform today. The numbers will say something different, but I feel really good,” he said.
Santana threw 30 pitches, 22 for strikes, before going to the bullpen and throwing an additional 15 pitches.
“I was rushing my delivery a little and they were aggressive swinging right away,” he said. “We threw a lot of first pitches for strikes. I threw a couple of fastballs that stayed up in the strike zone.
“There are a lot of adjustments I’ve got to make. It’s going to take some time, but that’s what we’re here for,” he said.

Let’s talk draft

Who do you see going first overall?

Do you think the Dolphins will keep the first pick or trade it? Do you think the first pick helps more than it hurts? A team like that needs a lot of good players, not one excellent player.

Insider thinks that the Panthers are going to make a play for Moss

:yikes: Who knows, it might be true? Don't sound like the ultra conservative Panthers. They did say though that, they was going after a couple of big names.

Albert Pujols: tough or stubborn?

Quote:

Pujols’ personality vacillates by the minute, from charming to downright rude, and he takes the latter tack with any inquiry about his injuries: “It’s not a big deal.”

Press further and this: “Why do you keep talking about the dang elbow?”

For one, Pujols is probably the greatest pure hitter of his generation and, when healthy, gives Alex Rodriguez a good run for the best-player-in-baseball mantle. Last year, when he played through the pain, Pujols put up the worst power numbers of his career. The Cardinals, with a serious injury sidelining him, could very well approach triple-digit losses.

So … yeah, the dang elbow is kind of important, as are all of Pujols’ carpals, tarsals and other various bits and pieces. If the Cardinals care to contend in the future, they need a healthy Pujols, not one who turns into a jalopy before his 30th birthday.

Now, this isn’t to say that will happen. But why chance it with someone of Pujols’ caliber? Pujols’ single-mindedness can get in the way of his better judgment, and a strong-minded authority figure would step in and demand rest or, if necessary, surgery.

Pujols only hit 32 home runs last year. He's played all but 43 games in 7 years. It's just not smart to be this beat up before the pre-season even starts. If he doesn't get fully healthy, it could get even worse for Pujols.

Moose Q&A

Question: Will you wear number 87?
Answer: It's already done. I made that call (to Jeff King) before I made any other call. Jeff is a good kid. I had a conversation with Jeff and we came to an agreement, so I was able to get my jersey back.

Neifi Perez signed

Rockies bring back Neifi Perez on minor league contract - MLB - Yahoo! Sports

Can't contain my excitement. I'd just been thinking out loud that what this team needs is another candidate in the middle infield mix. Is this an early vote of no confidence in Barmes and Quintanilla or just a goodwill gesture as the article states? Is Neifi going to see any playing time in ST?
