Think you are going to the All-Star Game?

Filed under: Baseball | by bedir @ 7:51 pm

You better be a Met, or a Yankee/Red Sox. The first release of the All-Star Balloting is out and it shouldn’t be a surprise but the NL leading Mets dominate the voting. The three highest vote getters so far are Carlos Beltran, Jose Reyes and David Wright. Fourth in voting is the sluggish Cardinal, Albert Pujols. Surprising to me is that Barry Bonds is getting a lot of support so far. Ken Griffey Jr’s comeback is fueling his fourth place finish in the Outfield as well.

As I submit in this thread, the early vote isn’t awful, but while each of the leaders is among the best at their position, they aren’t the premier talent. The AL is much worse as many positions are lead by players who aren’t top three in their position. It is also obvious from the voting results that the internet votes have yet to be counted.

The NBA Playoffs are winding down

Both NBA conference final series’ are currently at 2-1, with the Detroit Pistons and the San Antonio Spurs leading in their respective conferences. Both teams were up 2-0, and it looked like they would or could make short work of their opponents (the Cleveland Cavaliers and Utah Jazz, respectively). Yet when all seemed lost, the stars came out to shine for Jazz and Cavs, willing their teams to their first wins of the series.

Deron Williams, in only his second year in the NBA, has had his coming out party during the playoffs and really stepped it up in game 3 while scoring 31 points and dishing the ball to help get the Jazz on track and make it a series again.

Back over in the East, LeBron James took a big hit from the media and fans when he passed up on open dunk / layup with 5 seconds left to tie game one, opting to kick it out to a wide open Donyell Marshall instead, which Marshall missed. James couldn’t shake off the critics leading to an awful game 2 (seeing his team blow a big lead and only scoring 19 points himself). So the Cavaliers franchise player took heat and had his doubters challenge him… so what’s a franchise player to do in front of a home crowd in Game 3? Drop 30 plus points, 9 assists and and 9 rebounds to lead the Cavs to a W, moving the series to 2-1.

The Pistons and Spurs are both capable of winning the next games and putting the series away, but the Jazz and Cavs both showed some guts in game 3 of their series’ and gave their fans hope that it could be long series’ ahead for all parties involved.

Portland gets to add Greg Oden to ROY Brandon Roy, while Seattle gets the second pick and Atlanta number three. Atlanta will also have the 11th pick. Not one of the three worst teams in the NBA managed to get a Lottery “win.”

The NBA Playoffs continue tonight as San Antonio and Utah continue their series. The Spurs’ lead 1-0.

There’s rampant speculation and rumors flying everywhere about the National Hockey League’s major jersey shakeup that will take place after the 2006-07 season concludes. The Washington Capitals have already announced that they will be unveiling a return-to-red-white-and-blue jersey and logo at the June 22nd draft party but that hasn’t stopped speculation… Nor graphic artists from having fun with concepts. Case in point, check out this Capitals jersey rendering and leave your thoughts and comments.

There have already been other rumored-but-proven-false renderings posted on FanHome but that shouldn’t stop the speculation of just what is in store for which teams.

Roger Clemens - Back in Black (pinstripes)

Filed under: Baseball | by bedir @ 8:17 pm

The unaging right-hander has made his choice. He is a Yankee once again. After last year’s partial season with Houston he again gets the same ability to try and compete for only two-thirds of the season. The Yankees fans at the Stadium got to see him announce on the DiamondVision screen as he promised to speak to them more in the future. A unique formal announcement to say the least. I wonder of the New York papers will even notice that the Yankees beat the Mariners today?

This gives the New York ballclub a solid staff when healthy of Clemens, Wang, Petitte, Mussina and likely Igawa late in the season. A staff that when healthy will have its work cut out trying to catch up to the Boston Red Sox with their early season dominance from the rotation and the bitter taste of betrayal.
